NIGERIAN DESIGNERS and TAILORS

I have always been worried about The Nigerian Designers and Tailors: Poor Finishing and Detailing.

Firstly, let me talk about Custom clothing:

it's a loaded phrase. For many, its a culture. for some, its a conspicuous consumption and enormous expense. Since the new era designers charge so much. This is exactly why the vast majority of consumers tend to stick with off-the-rack , stitch for stitch, the best value in tailored clothing in the marketplace today.

For quite some time now, the ability of Nigerian tailors to efficiently bring out the work of a designer is getting better. Judging by the just completed Arise Magazine Fashion Week, Nigerian Designers brought out their A games. Despite this i still have some important things to discuss about Nigerian tailors.

  All designers should have it at the back of their mind that the reasons an average Nigerian would patronize a local designer in-place of the foreign ones are because;

  • Tailoring with the finest prints/fabrics:
In Nigeria, we have the fine and quality material here in Nigeria. Men who walk confidently through the world have discovered a secret. They have found a custom tailor who combines exceptional quality and service. Their wardrobe is a perfect fit, tailored with the finest in custom shirts, men’s suits, slacks, jackets, vests and even traditional wears. That pleasure shouldn't be deprived of Nigerians by the tailors.
  • The Cut/Perfect fit:
The word "tailoring" literally means "the art of cutting." The tailor's job is to create clothing based on the measurements of the individual. Tailors are experts in the area of measurement, sewing, cutting and fitting. Once again FITTING.
  • Fashion Consulting:
You serve as a fashion consultant even though you are not paid for this. Your customer believes custom tailors can create a wardrobe that perfectly fits your measurements and your taste. Together, you and your tailor can choose the fabric, style, seam details and preferred fit.

I'll stop at this three points for now. Now let me get back to what hurt me most about the tailoring by Nigerian tailors.
With my few months in the fashion industry, i have noticed somethings about Nigerian tailors. I'll mention a few on this post.
  •  NEATNESS:
This for obvious reason is the most challenging task to Nigerian tailors. The clothes don't just come out neat. I have had experience with tailors sewing white clothes ended up staining the fabric with their dirty hands. Learn to wear a glove.

  • DETAILING:
Detailing is what as a tailor you should never take for granted. The key to improving attention to detail is concentration. Unless tailors focus intently, information will not stay encoded in their memory. When people need to
remember something, their brain uses the same pattern of nerve cells it used to store the information. The harder someone concentrates on something, the easier it is to recall.

  •  SEWING MACHINE PROBLEMS:

Nigerian tailors dont pay attention to sewing machines and needles. Sewing with a blunted needle is a common problem: it leaves bigger holes in the fabric, which weaken stitches and damage the fabric. The basic mechanisms of a sewing machine are fairly simple. While some problems require professional repair, most can be identified and remedied yourself. Just remember to unplug the machine before working on the problem.

  • FITTING:
Each time i see a Nigerian designers work there is always something tacky about the fitting mostly on the male collections. The blazers, shirts, pants and some tradtitional wears have something off about them. Even though the
designing might be great. I think impatience, combination of measurements and placement of the materials makes the outfit come out a little off.

After all said and done, i think Nigerian tailors need to up their game. Custom fit clothing remains something i root for. knowing You'll look good, your clothes will fit and you'll develop a relationship with someone who is just as interested in your looks as you are, makes me a big fan of custom-fit clothing.

Cheers
